(Leger) We go out with Capt. Norman Miller aboard the Rascal - she's about 40 feet and we only go about 1/4 of a mile, just outside the sandbars off of Portsmouth Island. It gets kinda rolly sometimes but the big reds are there. We throw out big chunks of fresh mullet, sit back and wait. Booooom!
Sometimes we'll fish in the inlet between Ocracoke and Portsmouth too.
You need to meet Mark Patterson, the guy that fishes out of kayaks. He caught 3 kings last week out of his kayak.

What's biting:
May 2, 2008: "Good sizes and numbers reported the last couple weeks. I have found my luck tobe just as the tide heads back out. Live mud minnows on a carolina rig.
just for the sake of reporting, last week a guy set into a 35-40 lbs ray while were out there. It was cool seeing everyone freak out when I removed the hook. good luck everyone.

Aug. 4, 2008 (re: how is fishing near Cherry Grove/Hog Inlet in fall?)
"I'm not a local, but that is when we do our yearly trip to CG (Cherry Grove) every year. For me it's been blues and spot in the surf on a regular basis (mainly blues). Plenty of finger mullet in the surf for bait."

Springtime is always a great time to fish the inshore waters of the Grand Strand. This year is no difference, and the warming trend we’ve experienced lately has caused the fishing to really heat up.
Captain Michael Rutenberg explains that all fishing activity is cued by warming water temperatures, and he was happy to share his thoughts on fishing this time of year in the Myrtle Beach area.
Flounder and trout are two of Capt. Rutenberg’s target fish this time of year, and he targets them in the major creek mouths and flats, particularly during the ebb tide. The water at ebb tide has had 6 hours to heat up, Rutenberg explains, and as this warm water leaves the creeks, the fish will be with it. Try root beer colored Berkley Gulp on jigheads just heavy enough to keep them on the bottom.
During the flood tide, Rutenberg suggests going back further into the shallow flats in search of flounder. The best place this time of year along the Grand Strand is Hog Inlet in the Cherry Grove area. This small inlet heats up sooner than any other inlets, and according to Rutenberg, so does the flounder fishing. In his words, spring flounder=Hog Inlet.
Sheepshead are also being caught around the Little River Jetty. Fiddler crabs and shrimp are good baits for this toothy fish, but approach quietly for they scare easily. Also, pay real close attention to your line because there’s not a sneakier inshore fish around and they can steal your bait before you know it. Anchor close to the rocks and fish right amongst them.
Aside from being a USCG licensed captain, Capt. Rutenberg is also a biology teacher. This gives anglers fishing with him a unique perspective to fishing—one he likes to call Eco-fishing. Check out his website at http://www.coastalecocharters.com/eco-fishing and see his picture below with a nice Hog Inlet springtime flounder.

New landings on Dan, Smith rivers
"The opening of Island Ford in (Eden's) Spray section and Draper, located off N.C. 700, will also be more convenient for residents who use the rivers. The city now has access points in each area of the city. The other landing is in Leaksville."
The Island Ford landing provides access to the Smith River.
The Draper landing is for the Dan River. The Dan River Basin Association is planning a free outing at the Draper landing at 10 a.m. on Sept. 5. Participants will float to Berry Hill Bridge.

Snow Camp

Went fishing at Lake Helen in Snow Camp with Leger, Nate, Gerald and Rob.
Caught a few largemouth bass using top water lurers (popper mostly). Leger caught some decent-size bass using green plastic worms.
Tasty burgers and Nathan's dogs.
Burger recipe from Leger:
- about 2 tablespoons of garlic (the kind that comes prechopped in a jar)
- salt (probably a tablespoon)
- black pepper (prob a tablespoon)
- Texas Pete (10 good shakes or to your taste)
- Worstershire sauce ( prob 2-3 tablespoons)
- Chili powder (prob 1-2 tablespoons)
I mixed it up real well and made the patties. I think having them sit for a while allows them to soak in the flavors from the ingredients. Good luck.
Photos and video.

Altamahaw paddle access opens
ALTAMAHAW (MCT) — Canoeists and kayakers now have yet another spot to access the Haw River.
The Altamahaw Paddle Access, just off N.C. 87 north of Altamahaw-Ossipee Elementary School, opened recently.
Accessible only at elevated water levels, the county's northernmost public paddle access is open every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and features areas for picnics and fishing. The Altamahaw site is "one of the most beautiful on the entire river," says Haw River Trail Coordinator Brian Baker.
